Peter Cheyney was the premier British author of hard-boiled detective fiction.
He created unsentimental, hard-drinking, devastatingly charming heroes, and intelligent, often fatally attractive heroines: they are the direct forerunners of the characters created by the Len Deighton and Ian Fleming.

Cheyney’s colourful stories helped keep British morale high in The Second World War, and at his post-war peak he sold over five million books world-wide.
