• THE WIFE OF GENERAL LING (1937)
In this snappy espionage drama, a Secret Service agent must discover who has been smuggling British arms into China. The prime suspect is a prosperous Chinese merchant-philanthropist and the agent thinks the merchant is working with the notorious Chinese guerrilla warlord General Ling. What the agent doesn't know is that the merchant and the general are the same man. The villain's wife is a former lover of the agent. When she learns about her husband's hijinks, she decides to help the agent catch him. In the end, the villain is killed and the lovers joyfully reunite. (Sandra Brennan - allmovie.com)

• UNEASY TERMS (1948)
Before detective Slim Callaghan (Michael Rennie) can meet with prospective client Col. Stenhurst, he gets drugged, is ordered not to take the case by the colonel's step-daughter, and finds Stenhurst's dead body. So, of course, Callaghan investigates for himself, accurately predicting that several of the relatives will hire him. What he finds is a sordid history of murder and blackmail. Vernon Sewell's Uneasy Terms is a scrambled British attempt at American-style hard boil. (Steve Press - allmovie.com)

• DIPLOMATIC COURIER (1952)
When undercover secret agent Tyrone Power is thwarted in his efforts to obtain a vital document with details of the Russian invasion of Yugoslavia by the death of the courier at the hands of two Russian agents, Siletti and Buchinski (aka Charles Bronson), it becomes his duty to go after the murderers and retrieve the papers. With more loops and turnabouts than a snake, the plot has surprises with agents, double agents, mistaken information and is, all in all, a surprisingly exciting spy vehicle. Michael Ansara and Lee Marvin also make brief appearances in this early cold war story. A script with a lot of holes in it is pulled off by the fine performances and tight direction given in this film. (Tana Hobart - allmovie.com)

• MEET MR. CALLAGHAN (1954)
Slim Callaghan, a fictional British private detective in the American "hard boiled" mode, was the central character in several popular Peter Cheyney novels, in a stage play by Gerald Verner, and in the 1948 movie programmer Uneasy Terms, which top-billed Michael Rennie. Meet Mr. Callaghan stars Derrick DeMarney, no stranger to detective films, in the title role. In this "pilot" for a proposed Callaghan movie series, Slim is required to solve the death of a much-hated rich man. Meet Mr. Callagahan made money (no surprise, since it cost practically nothing to make), but no sequels resulted. In the late 1950s, however, a French-made group of Slim Calaghan pictures went on the market, starring Eddie ("Lemmy Caution") Constantine. (Hal Erickson - allmovie.com)

• LA MÔME VERT-DE-GRIS (1953)
The title of this French crime meller translates into The Gun Moll. Eddie Constantine makes the first of several appearances as Lemmy Caution, the two-fisted American government agent created by novelist Peter Cheney. In this outing, Lemmy is dispatched to Casablanca, there to put the kibosh on a gold-hijacking operation. His job is made easier when he wins gun moll Carlotta (Dominique Wilms) over to his side. At 105 minutes, the action flags on occasion in La Mome vert de Gris. Still, the film was successful enough to spawn a whole series of "Lemmy Caution" adventures, including Jean-Luc Goddard's novelle vague fantasy Alphaville (1966). (Hal Erickson - allmovie.com)

• LES FEMMES S’EN BALANCENT (1953)
Eddie Constantine makes his third appearance as Peter Cheney's two-fisted FBI agent Lemmy Caution in Les Femmes S'en Balancent (aka Dames Get Along). In this outing, Lemmy is on the trail of a counterfeiting gang. Somehow or other, the mission requires him to dally with a bevy of international beauties, including Nadia Gray and Dominique Willms. Eventually, Lemmy puts the clues together and locates his quarry, leading to a climactic orgy of violence. Among the villains, the dependable Robert Berri stands out as a menacing hood in the Mike Mazurki tradition. (Hal Erickson - allmovie.com)

• CET HOMME EST DANGEREUX (1953)
Eddie Constantine makes his second appearance as Peter Cheyney's hard-boiled FBI agent Lemmy Caution in Cet Homme est Dangereux. Curiously, when first we meet Lemmy, he is a crook on the lam. Actually, our hero is working undercover to entrap a French bank robber. Along the way, he becomes a reluctant kidnapper, snatching dizzy American heiress Constance (Collette Doreal). As things turn out, it is Constance who holds Lemmy prisoner at fade-out timenot that he's complaining about it. Based on Peter Cheyney's novel The Gun Moll Poison Ivy, Cet Homme est Dangereux was simultenously filmed in an English-language version. (Hal Erickson - allmovie.com)

• VOUS PIGEZ? (1956)
Vous Pigez! (You Get It!) stars Eddie Constantine in his standard guise of hard-boiled American G-man Lemmy Caution. The plot is the usual melange of intrigue, double-crosses and impossibly beautiful women. The delectable damsels in this outing include the toothsome Maria Frau, Nadine Tallier and Irene Tunc. The villainy is in the capable hands of Roger Hanin, who went on to spy-flick fame of his own as "The Tiger." Though Vous Pigez! was the seventh of the "Caution" series, it was held back from release in the U.S. until a few of the later entries made the rounds. (Hal Erickson - allmovie.com)

• ÇA N'ARRIVE QU'AUX VIVANTS (1958)
This uneven crime drama by director Tony Saytor is based on a tale by novelist Peter Cheney (author of the 1945 La Mome Vert de Gris). The story here has nothing innovative to offer; it is essentially what happens when a decent man (Raymond Pellegrin) is framed for a crime he never committed by some mafia-types. Rather than sit back and accept his misfortune, the good guy changes his colors and goes after the gangsters, one by one. (Eleanor Mannikka - allmovie.com)

• COMMENT QU’ELLE EST! (1960)
This "B"-grade spy drama features the ubiquitous Eddie Constantine as Lemmy (a favorite role), the special agent who has an unbounded capacity for Scotch and women, though not necessarily in that order. Lemmy has come to France to help the secret police track down a dangerous spy. His ability to fight himself out of any corner and charm himself out when fighting will not work comes in handy, as he and his French colleagues start to hunt down the elusive spy. • LEMMY POUR LES DAMES (1961)
Lead Eddie Constantine first began his stint as Lemmy, the hard-drinking, hard-fighting, womanizing American agent, back in 1951. He continues in that well-established role in this routine spy story about blackmail and state secrets. While Lemmy is relaxing on vacation, a woman is murdered and he gets involved in discovering why. It turns out that she and four other wives have been the target of blackmail. An Eastern European government is using unsavory information from the wives' pasts to force them into prying intelligence data out of their husbands all of whom work in government capacities in a variety of leading Western democracies. • ALPHAVILLE
Une étrange aventure de Lemmy Caution (1965)
In Alphaville, Jean-Luc Godard fuses a hardboiled detective story with science fiction. Lemmy Caution (Eddie Constantine), a hero Godard borrowed from a series of French adventure films, comes to Alphaville, the capital of a totalitarian state, in order to destroy its leader, an almost-human computer called Alpha 60. While on his mission, Lemmy meets and falls in love with Natacha (Anna Karina), the daughter of the scientist who designed Alpha 60. Their love becomes the most profound challenge to the computer's control. Void of any flashy special effects, Alphaville uses 1960s Paris to depict the city of the future. Private eye films are famed for their dialogue but this futuristic thriller, with Constantine as a detective called Lemmy Caution sent to rescue a scientist from a city run by an electronic brain, has some of the most extraordinary dialogue in the genre. As the electronic brain says: Sometimes reality is too complex for oral communication. But legend embodies it in a form which enables all over the world. Top that Philip Marlowe. Beautiful to look at, hard to follow, this is fascinating, irritating viewing. If you’re bored just follow the influences on Philip K Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, the source for Blade Runner.

• ALLEMAGNE 90 NEUF ZÉRO (1991)
Germany Year Nine Zero follows an old spy's journey back to France from the east. Since the Cold War has ended the spy is unclear about who his enemies are, and he doesn't know what to do with himself. Jean-Luc Godard's film is a series of scenes that present his thoughts on European unification and the fall of Communism. The title harkens back to Roberto Rossellini's Germany Year Zero, a film made in the immediate aftermath of World War II that, like Godard's film, considered the fate of the world in changing political conditions. As his use of Rossellini's title suggests, Godard is concerned with the fate of cinema as well as the fate of the world. He is concerned that as borders are erased, and as the world comes more and more under the sway of corporate power, the cinema will become more and more homogenized and commercial.
